Tianna Lee Rodriguez is a Brooklyn-based textile artist. Soccer was basically her first language growing up: years of competitive play eventually turned into coaching youth teams through college. Everything shifted after a costume design class made her fall into sewing and garment construction. From there, she started flipping vintage and upcycled football jerseys through a more feminine, playful perspective.

Description

MAFC approaches football as both lens and mirror: a cultural territory through which to read the psychic, aesthetic, and cultural conditions of the post-millennium zeitgeist. Far beyond the limits of the pitch, football emerges as one of the last truly global vernaculars—a field where images, symbols, myths, and desires circulate at impossible speed, continuously shedding old meanings to acquire new ones. Mental Athletic’s sister publication MAFC critically re-reads the beautiful game as a portal into broader global shift—one in which idolisation fractures into dispersed forms across the world, subcultures blur, and notions of fixed identity dissolve.

Launched this summer to coincide with the 2026 FIFA World Cup, MAFC comes to life to sit with the real ones and establish a new protocol. In the words of the editor’s note: “Football is pop. Period. A block party with no door policy. We want to return to this, to the very foundations upon which football entered this world.”

Within Issue #1, voices move from the outward to the inward in a lysergic journey through football, spanning aesthetics, philosophy, architecture, fashion theory, and beyond—reclaiming an underground perspective that exists beyond mainstream narratives.
